Sheffield Roxy 8th June 87. Last time I was to see them before True Faith and Substance and all the estate agents and yuppie tossers jumped on the bandwagon

I went out and bought a pair of tan cords after this gig, like what Barney was wearing. Yes

Can't remember the cut, but I think it was 'Aviation' stylee or something? They were really high-waisted and came up to the armpits like something out of the 1950s. laugh

He had a shit jumper on though, from memory? Sports casual number in various blobs of pastel. Jumper got ditched after the first track though.

Hmmm let's have a little casting back and digging out the old memory box.

Birmingham 81, everything was new and fresh
Deeside 82, first signs for me of a different crowd
Brixton Ace 83, the first truly great UK show?
Bradford 84, the medley and then Face Up, and then going years without realising they'd come back on and done Thieves!
The 84 UK tour, Chippenham, Gloucester, Portsmouth
All of 85, simply a golden year when they were at their live peak
Oxford and Poole 86
That October week - Brum, Malvern, T&C then the fookin' Albert Hall
Not much in 87 to be fair, the curse of Poo Faith and the rot had set in, though some of the foreign gigs sound ok.
Time travel in 88 at the start of Ceremony at GMex, how to move 50 yards in 5 seconds without being Usain Bolt
89 - can't remember much!
93 - I Remember Nothing
98 - wasn't interested
91 - boring
92 - good craic in Paris and Finsbury
95 - Les Vielles Charrues the highlight
96 - all good, especially Athens
11 - Troxy great night besides the Order!

My first New Order gig £4 for the ticket, well worth it even thought I was only on £27.50 a week on a YTS scheme

Blimey, I'd have said that was their zenith. A band at the peak of their powers.

I never experienced a ruck at a gig to mirror the Finsbree Park one!

They probably were at their zenith, yes, but it started getting more predictable, and the mass exposure Toothache got changed everything.

Part of me sees this in an almost identical way to how Dec expressed how it changed for him in 1984 - they were still my band, our band in 86. In 87 they were everyone's band, and the affinity had changed. Ironically it had changed back by 2005-6 but has gone the other way again now.

I love that Barcelona gig on 1984 - Studio 54, right?

Ricardo sent me a bootleg years ago.

What ruck at Finsbury? That was nothing compared to Reading 1998.

Manchester Apollo 1998. That's the one.

You jest, surely? Largest widescale ruck I've ever experienced at a gig. Barriers at the front of the stage got buckled during ACR's support set, and it just got worse from then on. Band were delayed going on, everyone had to move right back, and then the whole thing kicked off with Touched again. Listen to the bootleg and all the 'move back' comments from Barney and Hooky.

G-Mex 88 too, on a similar scale.

Don't remember Apollo 98 being particularly hairy, but I think the world had moved on since then and big moshes at gigs were starting to be a thing of the past.
