OK peeps, let's have a trawl through New Order's other reggae cover. Available only on the 2nd Peel session recording, this was a cover of a track from Keith Hudson's "Torch of Freedom" 1975 LP. A personal favourite of mine, what y'all think?

1. Best bit
2. Worst bit
3. Like/hate about it
4. Percentage rating
5. Do you think that Bernard's mishearing the lyrics at the start of the song was the reason they didn't do any more covers?

I was talking to preachy-preach about kissy-kiss.....

1. no no
2. a miss-hit from the beginning to the end
4. 9.99 %
5. ...this and the fact, that NO is far away from playing reggae; when I think back to the first UB40 album - a grower, that; they have should played it...

No comment! Think it fits in with them "Finding their feet" phase although I cant imagine them doing a whole album of reggae covers ala UB40.

I do find it a strangely interesting track though, you've got to admit that it stands out in their recorded output! ISTR that the peels sessions ep this came out on was one of my 1st NO purchases and it certainly seemed to be out of place even in their early recordings.

It was recorded as a tribute to Ian, being one of his favourite songs and also a favourite of John Peel's. Sure, they could have done Ultraviolence, The Village or Leave Me Alone instead, as they were all written at the time of this Peel session, but they decided to do something different. Fair play to them. I don't think it was ever supposed to be anything other than something different, a break from the norm.

Alan Wise couldn't make it tonight.....so instead we've got four boys from postcodes beginning with S. We are a re: order tribute band called Disorder. This is a song about Radios.

1. Gillian's synth
2. Bernard's vocals
3. I like it because they have never done anything like it, very different.
4. 90%
5. New Order should never do a reggae cover again, oh hang on, they did, with Vietnam.

1. The it was one of the first songs I ever heard by NO...and it was RAW!!
2. It couldn't stand up with the rest of their catalog (On it's own)
3. I lke that it was so raw...that they had the balls to do it!! I don't really hate anything about ANY NO song...hate is too strong a word for me.
4. 78.654763442229911%
5. Well, let's define this line? Do you mean '...RECORD anymore covers?' Cuz they have done plenty of covers since [in a live forum].

You mean, Sister Ray, When I'm With You, Do The Ostrich and even a cover of Anarchy In The UK.

Correct sir. So, you see, they haven't really been 'afraid' of the covers, but why put em on an album when you've got you're own streak of creativity going? But covers are a nice, fun thing to do live....but this is for another forum.

I'm not sure how much you can look at Sister Ray and Do The Ostrich as covers really, they are little more than a borrowed riff and liberal doses of potty mouth! When I'm With You was a really interesting one though, I cannot understand why they did it only the once, as it worked really well. Vietnam is a one-off for a charity record, and was chosen really because of its position in their past (as a source of inspiration for Love Vigilantes).

I'm glad they don't do covers with any regularity.
