Irvine Meadows, Irvine, California, United States of America (1989)

The shows on the second leg of the US tour were publicized more than the first and I recall being backed up in traffic on the 405 en route to Irvine Meadows. Public Image Ltd. had already taken the stage when I found my seat (assigned seating, unfortunately) and the Sugarcubes were probably finished before I entered the parking lot.

When New Order arrived onstage the roar of the crowd was deafening. Before launching into Ceremony, Barney dedicated this set to Pete DeFreitas of Echo & the Bunnymen who had recently been killed in a motorcycle accident. I must admit, the crowd was so noisy, at first I thought he said he was dedicating it to Benny Goodman! Regardless, the dedication gave this show a bit of a somber tone which set it apart from the playful Santa Barbara show I attended just a month and a half previous.

Apparently to amuse himself, Hooky occasionally addressed the audience with a Western/cowboy accent.

set:

Ceremony
True Faith
Age of Consent
Dream Attack
All the Way
Mr. Disco
Your Silent Face
Vanishing Point
Round & Round
Temptation
Bizarre Love Triangle
The Perfect Kiss

encore:
All Day Long
Fine Time
